The story of the Louis Vuitton NeoNoe begins long before its official 2017 release. Its creation is actually a modern reincarnation of a clever, 90-year-old custom order that inadvertently birthed the world’s very first designer bucket bag.
The 1932 Original: A Champagne Producer’s Problem
In 1932, a prominent French champagne producer approached Gaston-Louis Vuitton (the grandson of the house's founder) with a highly specific, unusual request. The producer needed a stylish, durable bag that could safely transport five bottles of heavy, pressurized champagne to high-society picnics and parties without them clinking or shattering against one another.
Gaston-Louis pulled design inspiration from rugged canvas sailor bags ("sac marin") and crafted an ingenious, reinforced masterpiece:
  • The Math: He structured a heavy-duty rectangular base perfectly sized to stand four bottles upright in the corners, with a fifth bottle placed upside down directly in the center.
  • The Closure: He added a thick leather drawstring fed through grommets. When pulled tight, it locked the bottles flush against one another so they couldn’t shift or tip.
  • The Name: He named the creation the Noé bag, which is French for Noah. This was a direct, playful nod to the biblical figure from Noah’s Ark, who famously went on to become the world's first recorded winemaker.
The bag was such a functional marvel that fashionable Parisians quickly realized it made an excellent everyday purse, transforming a utility item into a timeless icon.
The 2017 Evolution: Creating the NéoNoé
Fast forward nearly a century to the spring of 2017. While luxury collectors loved the historical charm of the classic Noé, its floppy shape, vachetta leather base (which was highly prone to water stains), and long, finicky leather drawstring felt outdated for modern, fast-paced lifestyles.
Louis Vuitton's design team decided to completely streamline the silhouette, introducing the NéoNoé ("New Noé"):
  • Removed the Leather Bottom: They did away with the thick vachetta leather base, extending the Monogram canvas all the way down for a cleaner look and easier maintenance.
  • Added a Central Divider: They split the gaping interior into two open main compartments, divided by a central zipped security pocket perfect for smartphones and keys.
  • Pop of Color: They lined the interior with vibrant, colorful bonded microfiber (such as Rose Poudré pink, Coquelicot red, or black) that peeked out from the side gussets.
  • Upgraded Hardware: They swapped the old knotted leather string for a modern leather drawstring slip-tab and a completely removable, adjustable shoulder strap for crossbody versatility.
